South Portland

South Portland is considered as the fourth-largest city in the Cumberland County, Maine, United States. Based on the 2016 statistics, the population of the city is only around 25,000+ people. Prior to its incorporation on March 15, 1895, South Portland was a part of Cape Elizabeth. It was in the year 1898 that it became a city.

There are so many great places to see in South Portland. One of the most iconic spots is the Greenbelt Walkway. What makes this attraction exceptional is that it has a five kilometer paved way that allows people to cross through several neighborhoods of Portland. Another place to visit here is the Mill Creek Park, which is located in the downtown area and is filled with beautifully landscaped areas. At the same time, South Portland also has a 40-acre forest with two ponds and the place is called Hinckley Park.

This city became the center for commercial activities because of its accessibility through the use of rail, marine, air and highway transportation options. As a matter of fact, South Portland is labeled as the retail capital of Maine. The first shopping mall in the city was Mill Creek Mall, which was built in the early 1950s. Right now, there were already some modifications introduced to the place. However, Mill Creek remains to be the top-shopping destination in Maine. Some of the common visitors are from Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough.

The city’s airport is also considered as the busiest airport in Maine. The Portland International Jetport is just located in the downtown area of the city, making it accessible to different travelers and locals. South Portland is also the home to large companies and facilities that are engaged in research and development as well as in manufacturing of products distributed all over the US.
